Notes
a. Note:   The family is listed on the manifest of the ship American at the Port of New York on October 20, 1838. There was an Edward Hanslip traveling with them who was age 28, b England - probable brother of John. For the image see https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939V-51S2-ZX?i=760&cc=1849782 This family is in the 1850 census of Clearspring, LaGrange Co., IN: Household Sex Age Birthplace John Hanslip M 55 England Anne Hanslip F 44 England James Hanslip M 23 England John Hanslip M 21 England Robert Hanslip M 18 England Emma Hanslip F 16 England Maria Hanslip F 12 England Edward Hanslip F 10 England Mary Ann Hanslip F 8 Ohio Melissa Hanslip F 7 Indiana This would seem to indicate that the family arrived in the US about 1840, first to Ohio then to Indiana. They were not in the 1841 census of the UK, but seem to be the family noted below for the census of 1 June 1840. Note - their passenger records show they arrived in Oct 1838. This family is the same family above in the census of 1860 living at Clearspring, LaGrange Co., IN: Name Age POB James Hanslip 30 England John Hanslip 63 England Ann Hanslip 40 England Robert Hanslip 28 England Edward Hanslip 21 England Melissa Hanslip 17 Indiana Mariah Hanslip 22 England Emma Hanslip 26 England The father is John, his wife Ann with the wrong age (see the 1850 census). The relationships were not noted in the 1850 or 1860 censuses, so it must be inferred. Checking the 1840 census, there was this family of a John Hanslip (pob is not noted in the early censuses and only the head of household is named): Home in 1840 (City, County, State): Mintor, Lake, Ohio Free White Persons - Males - Under 5: 1 Free White Persons - Males - 5 thru 9: 1 Free White Persons - Males - 10 thru 14: 2 Free White Persons - Males - 15 thru 19: 1 Free White Persons - Males - 40 thru 49: 1 Free White Persons - Females - Under 5: 1 Free White Persons - Females - 5 thru 9: 1 Free White Persons - Females - 30 thru 39: 1 This age profile fits nicely with the 1850 census. The male age 15-19 had probably left the household by the time of the 1850 census. Note, turns out he was Thomas. born at Selby, York in 1825, who died in 1842 and shares the marker with his father in the Jordon Cemetery in Lagrange, IN. Ann appears to have been buried elsewhere. By checking birth records in England for the names of the children shown in the 1850 census and matching them with the parent's names of John and Ann, there is a perfect match for all of them to the expected dob vs age. James and John (Jr.) were both born (or christened) at Selby, York and the others at Goole, York. Sufficient proof this is the right family. Further proof - John is buried at Lagrange, IN (ref Find A Grave).
