Notes
a. Note:   From David Lake: Because he was a conscientious diarist and letter writer, Charles Lanman Green (the great grandfather of Prudence and James) is an ancestor whose life is particularly well documented. Source materials are archived at the Huntington Library and the Wood Memorial Library and exist in a collection held by Prudence and David Lake. During the Civil War, Charles briefly served in the Union Army, then became a naval surgeon. Soon after the war ended, he became the doctor on the Miantonomoh, the first ironclad to cross the Atlantic. For 15 months beginning in 1866, the ship visited the major ports in Europe demonstrating the growing might of the U.S. Navy. Next, he served on the Nipsic. The captain ordered Charles to remove an injured sailor from the "sick list" in the belief that the sailor was malingering. As a matter of conscience and medical ethics, Charles refused and was court-martialed for disobedience to orders. At issue was whether a Navy doctor had exclusive jurisdiction over medical questions or whether the ship's captain could superimpose his own medical judgments. The proceeding concluded that the captain's orders must be obeyed even on medical questions. Although Charles was convicted, the Secretary of the Navy reduced his punishment to a reprimand because the offense was an honest "mistake of judgment in regard to professional rights and duties." Known residences of Charles from original records: 1840 His immediate family was not found in this census, but his grandfather Samuel and family was and were living at East Windsor, Hartford, CT. 1850 His family was not found in the census, but it is known they lived in the Hartford area, probably South Windsor.
