a. Note:   Commodore Green entered the Navy at the age of 13, serving for some 40 years and retiring with the rank of Commodore (a rank that later became Rear Admiral). During the Civil War, he captained the Jamestown from 1861-1862. It was assigned to the Atlantic Blockade Squadron with the duty of blockading Confederate ports. His son Charles Lanman Green acted as his father's shipboard civilian clerk, later becoming a naval surgeon. Charles was the fifth child and fourth son of Samuel and Mary Starr Green. (Ref Commodore Charles Green by Sally Starr Nichols). He entered the U.S. Navy on 1 May 1826 at Norfolk, VA (age 13), became Lieutenant on 8 March 1837, Commander on 14 Sep 1855, Captain on 16 Jul 1862 and Commodore on 4 April 1867. He resided several years in Erie, Penn. and afterwords in South Windsor, Conn. on the Dr. Charles Tudor place. (ref Diary of David McClure). In 1840 he was single and in the Navy. He does not appear in that census, but his father and family were living in East Windsor, CT.. The family is not enumerated in the 1850 census. In 1851 he built a well known house on Main Street, South Windsor of which some photos are provided at http://historicbuildingsct.com/?p=565 In the census of South Windsor, CT in 1870 he was an officer in the US Navy. Living in his household were two servants from Ireland and a female Orlean (sp?) Tudor, age 5, b CT. Who was she? Pauline, sister of Sophia? He showed his home had a value of $11,100 and had a personal estate of $3,818. According to the manuscript by Sally Starr Nichols, he died in Providence, RI on April 7, 1887 while visiting relatives. He is buried as noted below in CT. Other records confirm this although the death records for Conn. state his dod was 8 Feb 1887.
