Note: He is not listed in the index of the 1850 or 1860 census. His name is listed on the rolls of the Civil War Draft Registrations of CD19 of Pennsylvania (Erie), but no information to indicate he ever served. He is listed in the Erie, Pensylvania city directory for most of the years from 1865 (was a county clerk) through 1899 ( he was an attorney after ca 1870). He was enumerated in the 1870 census of Erie, Pennsylvania, at age 31, bPA, lawyer, real estate value of $12,000 and personal estate of $6000; and living with him was Charles Butterfield, 16 bPA, student, relationship not noted. Additional sources show that Charles was a youngr brother of Henry. There is a family tree at Ancestry.com that has a Henry Butterfield, shows several different dates of birth, parents Jonas and Mary Ann. There are several sources cited, some the same as used in this database. He is shown as born in Allegheny County, PA and died in March 1901, buried in Allegheny County, PA. He was a lawyer, had a son Charles born 1854, wife's name not noted. Update - his death record in Pittsburgh proves this was him, although Charles was his brother, not his son. There was another family headed by a Jonas Butterfield, who was also born in England, that is confused by some family trees at Ancestry as well as at least two other contemporary Henry Butterfields. He was not enumerated in the 1880 census, at least by that name. There was a Henry Butterfield listed in several city directories of Pittsburgh, PA as a clerk or laborer in years 1902 - 1916 - not the right person. There is a portrait of Henry at the webpage of state senators from Pennsylvania. Henry was a state senator in in 1877-1879. Ref: https://www.legis.state.pa.us/cfdocs/legis/BiosHistory/MemBio.cfm?ID=4417&body=S. He was also a state representative for several terms (Ref. https://www.legis.state.pa.us/cfdocs/legis/BiosHistory/MemBio.cfm?ID=6021&body=H). That webpage has a different portrait of him as well as this bio: BUTTERFIELD, Henry, a Representative from Erie County; born, c. 1838 in Butler County, Pa.; attended, Western University at Pittsburg (now University of Pittsburgh); clerk and deputy prothonotary, Erie County; transcribing clerk, Pennsylvania House of Representatives (1864-1865); Clerk of Courts, Erie County (appointed, 1865; elected, 1866-1867); attorney-at-law; appointed, District Attorney, Erie County; elected as a Republican to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1874 term; unsuccessful campaign for reelection to the House for the 1875 term; elected, Pennsylvania State Senate (1876-1880); reelected to the House for the 1893 term; not a candidate for reelection to the House for the 1895 term; died, March 10, 1901 in the city of Erie, Erie County, Pennsylvania. He was enmuerated in the 1900 census at Erie, PA as of June 1, 1900, but died in Pittsburgh of cardiac failure. He is buried in Allegheny Cemetery. There is another Henry Butterfield buried nearby, but in an adjacent section. That Henry was born 1872 and died in 1936, his wife, Katherine Lyons was born in 1871 and died in 1942 - the son of Jonas, Jr and his wife. Buried in the same section and lot number as Henry is a James Butterfield, dob unknown, died in 1901 and a George K. Butterfield, dob unknown, died in 1880 - both brothers of Henry. Also in this same lot is the mother of Henry, Mary Ann (Bryant) Butterfield, died in 1896. Also buried nearby is an older brother of Henry named Jonas R. Butterfield, born in Erie, PA in 1839, died in 1875.
