The story is told that John Garrett McKinnon went to James Peter Stewart the father of Caroline and asked him, "If you had a good pocket knife and lost it, what would you do?" James Peter Stewart said, "I would go back to the store and get another one like it." John Garrett McKinnon said, "This is what I have come to do. I had a good wife and I lost her, I am back to get another one." He at this time asked to marry Caroline Stewart the sister to his first wife. They were married December 11, 1870 by Rev. J.M. Clay in Randolph County, Georgia.
