Notes
a. Note:   N75 According to the 1900 Pulaski County census, his youngest son, Thomas John, said his father was born in England. He was most likely the first generation Pritchard in this country. Elizabeth and her husband likely settled in DeKalb County, Georgia in the early 1830's. DeKalb being the present day county of Atlanta. There home was near Stone Mountain.
Some things that have been said about this Pritchard, but so far can't be verified are that he was wealthy, and that he came from England. That he had been married before and already had a family before marrying Elizabeth. Other stories are that he was a stow a way on a ship with his brother, and his brother died on the voyage here. If he were wealthy, why would he have not paid for his passage? Some things said about Elizabeth are that after Pritchard died, she destroyed his will and all his papers, giving his children from the first marriage a dollar and dividing the rest among her own. Others say she destroyed all records because she could not read and didn't want others reading them. None of this so far is known to be true, except that it's fairly certain this Pritchard did come from England or Ireland, and according to census records, Elizabeth could not read or write.
Since we know their first son, Jordan, was born in South Carolina in 1829, it seems logical to assume that the Pritchards either lived in South Carolina in 1830 or in Georgia, since the second son, Joseph, was born there. They may not have been on any Census records at all for 1830, but assuming they were, the following facts would be true. This Pritchard whose first name is unknown, would have had a son between the ages of one to five, possibility a daughter about the same age, looking at the 1840 census there is a female in Elizabeth's household between five to ten, and in 1830, Elizabeth would have been 23.
Looking at all the Pritchards living in South Carolina in 1830, there are two possibilities. 1) William Pritchard who was between the age of thirty to forty, with a son one to five, two girls who were one to five, and a wife whose age was between twenty to thirty. This Pritchard lived in Anderson County. 2) Thomas Pritchard who was between fifty to sixty, who had a son between one to five, another son between five to ten, another son between twenty to thirty, another son between thirty to forty. Two females between five to ten, one female between twenty to thirty, and a another female between forty to fifty. The older woman could have been Elizabeth's mother. This Pritchard lived in Beaufort County.
Checking the Pritchard's living in Georgia in 1830, there are two possibilities. 1) William H. Pritchard would have been between the age of fifty to sixty. There was one son between one to five, two females between one to five, one female between five to ten, and one female between twenty to thirty. This Pritchard was living in Monroe County. 2) Wiley Pritchard would have been between twenty to thirty, he had one son between one to five, and his wife was between twenty to thirty. He also lived in Monroe County.
None of these four men can be found for certain on the 1840 censuses in either South Carolina or Georgia. There is a W. H. Pritchard living in Monroe County, Georgia, in 1840, but this could be either William H. or Wiley Pritchard, or neither. The age of the wife would have been right according to the 1830 census, in both of these cases, but the age for the head of house doesn't agree with what the 1830 census indicates would be the age for William H. Pritchard. It would be the correct age for Wiley Pritchard in 1840.
The one name that seems to have some merit, is the name of William H. Pritchard living in Georgia. We don't know what the H. stood for in his name, but it's possible it stood for either Hugh or Henry. One of Elizabeth Pritchard son's, Jordan, named his first born male child, William T. Pritchard, but it died in childbirth. The second son of Elizabeth Pritchard was named Joseph Hugh Pritchard. Her third son, Marion, named one of his son's Hugh Pritchard. The other son of Marion, John Westly named his first male child William T. Pritchard, but he also died in childbirth. The fourth son of Elizabeth, Thomas John, also had a son named John Henry and grandson named Hugh Pritchard. Also if this Pritchard had indeed been married before, he may have well been between the age of fifty to sixty, as this man only had young children living in his household. None of this is proof of anything, just something to think about.
