Note: N396 MARY ANN HAYS was the last child of Elizabeth Pritchard Hayes. Mary Ann was born April 1, 1844 or 1846 in DeKalb Country, Georgia. She is listed as a four-year-old on the 1850 Dekalb census. The name of her father was of course Hays, but his first name remains unknown. She is listed on the 1850 and 1860 census living in her mother's home. She indicated on the 1900 census that her father was born in South Carolina. Mary Ann came to Little Rock, probably with her two half brothers, likely in 1869. She married a John M. Paty in 1870. In Marriage Book 3, page 159, Pulaski Co., there is a marriage between a John M. Paty, age 32, and a Miss Mary A. Hayes, age 26, on August 7, 1870. The 1870 Arkansas Census has a J. M. Paty, age 32, from Tennessee, living in Jefferson Co. He was a widower, and had two children, James A., age 5, and Charles, age 3. A Elizabeth Stacy, age 54, keeping house, and another female, Sarah Paty, age 21. These were likely his mother and sister. He was a farmer, and had $1500 in personal value. It's not know for certain this is the correct John Paty, but it seems likely. The census was taken August 2, 1870, 5 days before the marriage of John and Mary. John and Mary had a daughter in November 1873 that was named Mary Malvina Paty. It is indicated on the 1880 AR census that Mary was born in AR., and her father was born in Tennessee. Its not known for sure what happened to John Paty, but its believed he died shortly after his daughter was born. There is a marriage record in Saline County, dated February 25, 1877, in Marriage Book D, page 127, of a marriage between Almond Steele of Saline Township, age 58 and Mrs Mary Paty of Otter Township, age 33. Bondsman J.W. Adams and James Walls Minister. The age of Mary on this marriage license probably should have been 31. On the 1850 GA. Census, her mother said she was four. On the 1860 GA. Census, her mother said she was fourteen. Her mother indicates by the age on the census she was born in 1846, but on both of her marriages, the age she gives would indicate she was born in 1844. She either believed she was older or just said so people would think she was older. Al Steele came to Saline County, Arkansas, in 1841, from North Carolina, with his parents, Thomas and Jane Steele. Thomas was born in 1786 and died 1862. Jane was born in 1790 and died between 1870-1880. The children of Thomas and Jane were, John Moore, born 1810, Sophie, born 1812, David, born 1814, Almond, born 1818, Samuel B., born 1824, James Franklin, born 1827, Benton Jonathan, born 1832. In 1844, Al Steele married Sara Malinda House. They had one daughter, Lucretia Jane born in 1841. Lucretia later married an Hardy Tatum. In 1845, he went to the Mexican War under General Jackson for two years(1846-1848). When he returned home, he built a sawmill and hunted bear. A bear bit off his little finger. Almond and Sara are listed on the 1850 Saline Co. Census, and he lists his occupation as a farmer. In 1855, Sara died and left Almon alone to rear his daughter. He married Martha Croxton, born in 1835, in 1857 and they had four sons, Tom born 1867, Samuel born 1872, Radford born 1869, who later married Cleo Sanders, and Calbert born 1874. Calbert died young, age 13, from Typhoid Fever in 1887. The family joined the Methodist Church. In 1872, Al Steele became despondent when his second wife, Martha, died. The Federals had scared away his slaves and his farm was ruined. In 1877, he married a widow, with one daughter, Mary Ann Hays Paty, who had beautiful red hair. Almond and Mary Ann Steele are listed as living in Saline County in 1880. They had eight children living in their home. Al indicated he was born in North Carolina and he is a farmer. He also indicated his parents were also born in North Carolina. Mary Ann Steele is listed as living in Pulaski Co., Big Rock Township in 1900. She is listed as head of house, since Al had died in 1888. She indicated she was renting their home and she has four children in her home. Harvey is 19 and lists his occupation as motorman, Clemmie is 18 and lists her occupation as laundress, George is 16 and Lee is 15. All the children can read and write. The 1910 Census has Mary Ann Hays Steele living with her youngest son George and his family in Grant County at age 66. Mary Ann died July 23, 1913, and both Mary and Almond are buried in Newfriendship (or Shaw) Cemetery in Tull, AR. The date on her tombstone for her birth is incorrect. It shows born April 1, 1844, it should be April 1, 1846. She had beautiful red hair.
