Note: N399 The following are statements made to Joe Herring by Orrin Redman, Jr., April 27, 1994. Orrin remembers that when he was a young man, his family, and his grandmother, Shady Finley, went on a trip to Atlanta, Georgia in the 30's. The house where Shady was born was still standing, and he believes it was about 5-6 miles north of Stone Mountain, as you could see the mountain from the house. It was located on the main road at the time between Athens and Atlanta. His grandmother told him she could still remember when the soldiers came through Atlanta during Sherman's March, and how her family had hid things. He thought she said she was born in DeKalb Co., but this house was in Gwinnett Co. He also stated that he remembers that the home of Shady's mother, Jane Thompson was still standing. The Thompson's had owned slaves and he said he thought he would see a big fine mansion, but it was little better than a log cabin. Also on this trip he remembers going to a Cyclo-Rama at a Gant or Grant Park, and seeing a map of all the locations of the families living in Atlanta during the time Atlanta was attacked by the Union Soldiers. The Pritchard and Thompson homes were on this map.
