Note: N401 Arthur Gatson and his brother, John Franklin, are listed on the 1860 Georgia Census, Habersham County, as living in the home of Joseph and Nancy Red, their grandparents. Arthur was 15 and John was 17, Arthur being born in Georgia and John, in North Carolina. Its believed their parents were Elizabeth and Joe Red, who apparently died young. They later inherited land in Georgia or had owned land, because in December 1883, they sold for $66, land to a Elizabeth and Matilda Red. Gatson was an Veteran of the Civil War. He enlisted from Glarksville, Georgia, February 16, 1863, in Co. I, 65th Infantry for a period of three years with Captain Grant. He later was assigned to Police Guard Mounted, July 31, 1863, at Knoxville, Tennessee. He was relieved from duty August 1, 1863, and entered the hospital at Knoxville, on August 11. He was dischared by General Bragg, October 24, 1863. His Certificate of Disability stated he was born in Habersham County, GA., he was 18 years of age, 5'6" tall, fair complexion, black eyes, light hair. During the last two months of service, said soldier has been unfit for duty forty days, by reason of Epilepsy-having been subject to Epileptic Fits. Signed John D. Stuart, Surgeon. (information obtained about Gatson Red in a book about the Family of James and Martha Red, written by Bryan L. Redd, Jr.) Arthur Gatson Red, died October 29, 1882, age 38 (according to his grandson, WB Red, Gatson died due to a malignant carbuncle on his back or spine). His wife later filed for a pension as a widow of a Civil War Veteran, July 28, 1919. She was granted a pension of 250.00, a year. Very little is known about Arthur Red, as he died so young, and his children never really knew him, his oldest child was only 10 years old. footnote - Their is a Bryan Red, of 2662 Fair Oaks Road, Decatur, Georgia, 30033 who had done a great deal of research on the Reds of Georgia.
