Notes
a. Note:   N95 Pearl had dated a young man named Carroll Wylie from around Beebe, Arkansas, and they were close to being engaged. Before this happened, Carroll joined the Navy, and Pearl met someone else. Pearl and Robert operated a large apartment house and a grocery store at 1201 West 7th street for many years, living at 1424 Oak. At one time their store was one of the larger ones in the area. Robert would get up around 3:30 am every morning to go to market and would close the store around 8:00 pm six days a week. On Sunday's they would almost have to get out of the house to keep from being beseeched customers. When the depression hit in 1932, the McGowan's lost their grocery store and the apartment house. Mr. McGowan couldn't turn people away who needed food, and had to charge it. Most of his customers were people he had known for a long time, and they all felt they could eventually pay there debts, but most never did. H.S. Turner, (son of Louisa North ) sold them one of his houses for the price of back taxes and McGowan opened up a small meat market after losing his grocery store. Before Robert died in 1937, Pearl's sister Ruby had become ill in California, and Pearl went to help take care of her for a while. Pearl could tell she was dying from cancer, but couldn't stay indefinitely, as Pearl had three children of her own. On her way back to Little Rock, Ruby died, and shortly R.J. McGowan did too, July 2, 1937. Pearl and R.J. had been happily married for 25 years. A few years later, Pearl went to visit her former brother-in-law who was living in Arcata, with his mother. In 1940-41, Pearl and Carroll Wylie were married. They build a new house and raised mink, and had a garden. They also had his Naval Pension. They were quite happy for 26 years. Near Carroll's death, he told Pearl to bury him next to Ruby, and for Pearl to go back to Little Rock to be with her children, and to be buried next to R.J. when she died. Also he told her not to keep putting flowers on his grave, but she did anyway.
