Notes
a. Note:   N512 Marion's wife, Jerusha whereabouts are unknown from the time he was killed, until she married Penn Thomas in Arkansas in 1876 in Grant County. She had moved to Arkansas with her two sons, John and Hugh, probably around 1869-70. Since she was widowed at a young age, in 1863, and had two children, and the next marriage we know of occurred in 1876, it seems likely that she was also married again during this time, and this may be why Jerusha hasn't been found on any census in 1870. Some people think she was living in Sweethome when she came here, which is Big Rock Township, in Pulaski County or Grant County. (Have been unable to locate her in Fouche or Big Rock Townships. Also need to look at marriage records occurring in Dekalb County, Ga., and surrounding counties for another marriage by Jerusha, after 1863 and before 1876.) According to records in the Saline County Probate Court, there is a statement by Jerusha that she married Henry Thomas in 1876 in Grant County. The courthouse burned in 1877 and all records were destroyed, so there is not a copy of their marriage record. They had one son together, Samuel Marion, born September 7, 1877. Henry died July 6, 1878 and did not leave a will, however he did have an estate. Jerusha Pritchard Thomas is found on the 1880 Saline County Census, in Saline Township, as head of house with John Wesley, age 19, Hugh age 18, and Samuel Thomas, age 3, born in Arkansas. Jerusha married her third husband, George W. Barnes, age 48, January 31, 1884. According to the marriage license, George was living in Fourche Township, in Pulaski County. Jerusha was living in Mabelvale at this time, and Thomas J. Pritchard, Jerushaís first husbandís brother, married them. The Pulaski County Personal Property Tax records of 1883-1888 indicate that G. W. Barnes of Fourche Township lived in Mabelvale just north of Shannon Hills in Saline County. As a farmer he paid a poll tax each year, indicated he owned 1-2 horses, 2 mules, 17-29 hogs, 1 wagon or carriage. The tax he paid each year ranged from $5.94-8.75. His personal value was around $300-400. The location of their farm was 2/1S/13W. George must have died near the end of the year 1887 or the early part of 1888. Jerusha married her fourth husband, Dan J. Howard, age 52, September 11, 1888 of Little Rock in Pulaski County. A. B. Miller, a Baptist Minister, married them. It's been said Dan was a farmer near Red Field in Jefferson Country, and he fell off a foot log bridge in January 1891 and drowned, but this has not been proven. The date of his death is probably correct however, since it was a date given by Lousia herself in her application for a Civil War Pension. Somewhere around 1889-90, she moved south near Prescott, Arkansas and lived with her son's. Her eldest son, John Wesley, died in February of 1891, so she may have never lived with him and his family, however, her other two sonsí probably were there. It's likely Jerusha lived with Hugh, until Hugh remarried in 1909. According to the 1900 Arkansas Census, she was living with Hugh Pritchard. This Census indicates that they were living in Nevada County, Boughton Township. Boughton Township is southeast of Prescott. Hugh was unmarried and was a sharecropper farmer on Ivan Hawkins farm. His last name was spelled Richard on this census and the year of birth is incorrect, it also indicates he could read and write, but this is probably not true. He was renting his land, but said he owned his home. On this Census, Jerusha stated that she had three children living out of five. She must have been including her two stepchildren by Henry P. Thomas, unless she had two more in another marriage between 1863-1876. Also on this Census, Jerusha, was listed as Jane J. Howard. This could indicate she preferred the name Jane to Jerusha. Jerusha must have moved back to Little Rock, around 1908-10, probably around the time her son, Hugh, remarried. It's believed she was living in one room at 912 Louisiana, Little Rock, working as a midwife around 1910. The City Directory for 1908-10 does not list Jerusha as living in the city. Jerusha is listed on the City Directory for 1911 as boarding at 2104 W. 11th St. She spend the latter part of her life living with families or individuals who needed someone to help care for them, sometimes as a midwife, nurse, or servant. In 1914, the City Directory listed her as boarding at 1215 Summit, in the home of a Dr. Samuel P. Vaughter. She is listed as a nurse in 1915 for a J.B. Phillips who was machinist. The address was 3719 W. 11th St. J.B. Phillips is listed as still living at that address in 1916, but not Jerusha. Jerusha applied for and received a $100.00 pension as a widow of a Civil War veteran, Marion D. Pritchard, on January 22, 1916, in Pulaski County. She stated she did own property exceeding $500.00. On her application for a pension, one of the people who stated that they knew her, was Louisa Smith, the second wife of Robert Jordan Pritchard. Louisa stated that she had known Jerusha for 26 years and 7 months. Also signing the application was Louisa's son-in-law, R.J. McGowan. The City Directory for Little Rock for the years 1916-1919 does not list a Jerusha Howard. The directories were sometimes made for two years, and not all years were made. The 1920, Saline County, Arkansas Census shows that Jerusha was living in Benton, Arkansas. She was living in the home of David L. Clay, age 33, on Sevier Street. David's wife was Manda, age 32, and they had four children. Jerusha is listed in their household as a servant, age 76. No relationship to them has been established, however Manda indicated on this census that she was born in Georgia and her mother in Alabama, so there is a possibility she could have been a niece to Jerusha. Jerusha lived with her son Sam and his family in her last years until her death on May 23, 1923, age 80. When she came to Chidester, AR. (near Camden) she carried all she owned in two trunks. In one trunk she had her personal belongings and in the other she had her feather bed. The neighbors built a casket for her when she died and carried her to the cemetery. She is buried at Red Hill Cemetery next to Red Hill Methodist Church. So far, no obituary has been found in any newspaper. No death certificate exists.
