Notes
a. Note:   N25 Contributed by Joe Herring: As of 1900 they were still living in Pulaski Co.,, AR. The 1910 AR Census indicated that they were living at 1407 W. 13th. Frank indicated that he was a tax assessor in the 3rd ward. They owned their home. Shady indicated that she had seven children living out of eight births. They had been married 35 years. There were four children living in the home, Chloe, Fred Jr., Flora B., and Violet. The Pulaski Co., Census for 1920 indicates that both Shady and Frank were still living at 1407 W. 13th St. Frank was retired. They had their daughter Flora and her husband Will, living with them at that time. There is a picture of them in the Arkansas Gazette telling about their 50th wedding anniversary in 1923. It read as follows: Mr. and Mrs. Frank M. Finley, of 1407 W. 13th street, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with a surprise party given by their children on Tuesday, February 6. Mr. Finley is 70 years of age, and Mrs. Finley is 65. They have six daughters and one son, 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. One son and three grandchildren are dead. Mr. and Mrs. Finley were married in Saline Co., Arkansas, February 6, 1873. Shady is described as a very small woman, who was very quiet and seldom talked, but did enjoy a good laugh. When she died, her hair was still black with no gray hair. According to Lola Kumpe, her mother Effie, used to tell her that poems in the Arkansas Gazette were written by her. Frank was very well built, who was just the opposite in personality from his wife. He loved to laugh and tease. The following are statements made to Joe Herring by Orrin Redman, Jr., April 27, 1994. Orrin remembers that when he was a young man, his family, and his grandmother, Shady Finley, went on a trip to Atlanta, Georgia in the 30's. The house where Shady was born was still standing, and he believes it was about 5-6 miles north of Stone Mountain, as you could see the mountain from the house. It was located on the main road at the time between Athens and Atlanta. His grandmother told him she could still remember when the soldiers came through Atlanta during Sherman's March, and how her family had hid things. He thought she said she was born in DeKalb Co., but this house was in Gwinnett Co., He also stated that he remembers that the home of Shady's mother, Jane Thompson was still standing. The Thompson's had owned slaves and he said he thought he would see a big fine mansion, but it was little better than a log cabin. Also on this trip he remembers going to a Cyclo-Rama at a Gant or Grant Park, and seeing a map of all the locations of the families living in Atlanta during the time Atlanta was attacked by the Union Soldiers. The Pritchard and Thompson homes were on this map.
