Note: A, but confirmation needed that he is s/o Jonathan. 1850 census shows him b KY 1811, Eliz. b VA. Christian Bumgardner was a proving witness for the will of Jonathan Bowling, and he also was bondsman for the executors, indicating there is a close alliance with the Baumgardner family. Martha Holland said she has concluded that Edward was NOT the father of James Madison Bowling, so Todd Bolen's book is also incorrect as was Clayton Rock. Martha Holland also descends from Amelia "Milly" Heard Patterson Jones whose history is in Joyce Poole's Heard book. (Martha purchased the CD of my book.) [Note from Joy McCook’s research 10-20-2005: Elizabeth’s parents were Christian Bumgardner and Elizabeth Edsall; Christian’s parents were Jacob Bumgardner b 1 Feb 1767 d 25 Aug 1857 m 28 Jun 1785 Mary M. Waddle/Waddell dau of Dr. Waddell (minister and teacher). Mary was b 22 Jul 1765 d 4 Dec 1849 Augusta Co., VA. This from a website so may not be proven, http://members.aol.com/ciiisiii/claudesgenealogy/bumgardner.htm. Jacob Bumgardner is listed on 1830 census Hart Co., KY next door to Susan Bolling, widow of Jonathan, but the census may have been re-written in alpha-surname order, so would not necessarily mean they were neighbors.] Information on family of James Madison Bowling, his wife and children came from a family group sheet on James Madison Bowling sent by Mildred Routt, 1983. She listed her sources as History of KY; Nell Bowman; Ethel Hudgins; Tombstones; Census Records; Rosa Lobb Patterson; Bible Record on Thomas A. Bowling; Marie Tennyson Baumgartner, old spelling of name. Routt said that James Madison Bowling had a Civil War military record and is buried at Cave Hill Cemetery, Jefferson Co., KY.
