He came from a long line of early settlers in America, most of whom had cast their lot in America generations before the Revolutionary Wa At the age of 17 years he enlisted in the army of the Confederacy and was one of the very few southern veterans living in this part of the country. He was first assigned to picket duty along the Potomac River but later participated in some of the most important battles of the war, among them being the battle of Balls Bluff in which the northern General Baker was killed; in the battle of Chickohomeny which lasted several days through most horrible swamps; at Seven Pines, Gainseys Mill, Fair Oaks, the second battle of Bull Run, at Fredericksburg, Chancellorville, and the most important battle of the war, at Gettysburg. Here he was in Picketts Division which made the famous charge, starting seventeen or eighteen Virginia regiments and ending up with less men than enough to recruit a single regiment. He was severely wounded in this battle, after they had charged for about a mile on a pretty good run through wheat fields which were just about waist high. The battle started on July 1, 1863 and continued three days, the charge taking place on July 3. On March 15, 1868 he married Rowena Davis of Union County, Ind. There were no children by this marriage. He was married a second time to Alice Hodson of Randolph County, Ind., who died in 1925. Twenty years ago they moved to Cleveland Twp, Whitley County, where they resided a number of years, and they then moved to the farm in Noble County where he resided until his death. They had six children, three of them surviving. They are Mrs. Leonard Johnson of Thorn Creek Twp, Whitley County, Mrs. Homer Grable at whose home he died, and Homer Lee Barr at home. He was a member of the IOOF Lodge. He was a member of Merriam Christian Church. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Virginia and Mary Alice Johnson, and Robert Edward Grable. One grandchild, Eunice Johnson, preceded him in death four months ago. Two sisters, Mrs. Emma Legalley and Mrs. Nellie Mullenix, both Cleveland; and one brother, David of Virginia also survive him. + 5-?-1929
