a. Note:   John Ayers and wife Nanne had 3 daughters and 2 sons. He was licensed as t he first local Methodist Minister in Bedford County, Virginia on 24 Oct 17 89. This was only 5 years after the establishment of the Methodist Episcop al Church in the United States in Dec. 1784. Bishop Francis Asbury from Ne w Jersey preached at the John Ayers' Chapel on John's farm in the summ er of 1788 when he visited Bedford County, according to the Journal and Le tters of Francis Asbury, Vol 1, page 575, edited by Dr. Elmer J. Cla rk in 1958. Ayer's Chapel closed around 1879 and the chapel became Ayer 's School and survived until sometime in the 1930's. This Ayer's farm al so contained a family cemetery of 1/8th acre according to the 24 Dec 18 51 deed. Bedford Co. Court Order book 9 page 317 - Oct 1789 John Ayers granted lice nse to perform marriages as medthodist preacher. From PAC notes GLR 24 F EB 1994
