Note:   Halaine Adda Wise Doss' obit Halaine Adda Wise Doss died at 7:50 pm, July 17, 2001 at the home of her son, George. She was 89 years old Halaine Adda Wise was born on October 26, 1911 to Hal Monte Wise and Gladys Warthen Wise. Hal had been born Albert Montalban Wise, but had a legal name change. Hal was owner and publisher of the Webb City Daily Sentinel in Webb City, Missouri. The family loved to travel and had travel by car (no small feat in the early 1900's) from coast to coast at various times. They got to see among other things, the Grand Canyon, the giant Sequoias in California, an Indianapolis 500 race, and Niagara Falls. His travel lust finally led the family on an around the world cruise in 1927. Halaine was the oldest of four children. She was active in swimming and basketball. She was editor-in-chief of the King Jack, her high school yearbook, during her senior year, 1929. She was valedictorian of her class at Webb City High School in 1929 and received a scholarship to Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York. At Vassar she was elected Phi Beta Kappa and graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1933. She majored in 'Rural Sociology.' She returned to Missouri to get her MA degree in statistics from the University of Missouri at Columbia in 1934. Her first real job was with one of the government agency's handling relief and/or welfare for the impoverished rural residents of the dust bowl 30's in Joplin, Missouri. Halaine eloped with Marion Howard Turner Doss. They were married in Columbus, Kansas on the 16th of September, 1935. Marion preceded her in death on October 13, 1972. They lived at various times in Joplin, Missouri, Sand Springs, Oklahoma, Clovis, New Mexico, and Salina, Columbus, Emporia, Neosho Rapids, and Topeka all in Kansas. In January of 1949 Halaine went to work for The Kansas State Department of Social Welfare as a statistician. She continued to work there until her retirement in October of 1976. She moved to Overbrook, Kansas in July of 1988. She was a member of First Christian Church in Overbrook, Kansas. She is survived by her son, George Warthen Wise Doss of Scranton, Kansas, 14 grandchildren, and 15 great-grand children. She was preceded in death by her son Marion Turner Doss, Jr., Harrisonburg, Virginia, on July 13, 2001. She was also preceded in death by three younger brothers; Andrew Moore (Jackie) Wise, Webb City, Missouri, Hal Monte (Budge) Wise, Jr., Webb City, Missouri, and George Warthen Wise, Seattle, Washington.
