From: History of Porter and Lake Counties, IN, 1882, Biographical Sketche s. Supplied by Larry Clark: Jerome Shearer was born in Stark County, OH, M arch 31, 1934. He was one of 15 children, ten boys and five girls, the fir st four having been born to John Shearer's first wife, the rest to his sec ond wife. The names of the children, beginning with the eldest, are Joh n, Adam, Sarah, Elizabeth, Susan, Daniel, Rachel, Polly, James, Samuel, Wa shington, Elijah, Jerome, George and Harrison. Sarah, Rachel, Polly and Ha rrison are dead (1882). Working on his father's farm until he arrived at t he age of 22, he came to Twenty-Mile Prairie, IN. He was married, 9/6/185 5, to Margaret Waltz, in Stark Co. She has given birth to 11 children - s ix boys and five girls. The names of the living children are John, Georg e, Albert, Calvin, Frank, Clara, Walter and Ida. After farming five yea rs on Twenty-Mile Prairie, Jerome came to his present place, where he h as lived ever since. In 1862, he enlisted in the 28th Indiana Regiment, a nd was on active duty in and around Nashville (TN). His father went all th rough the war of 1812. Jerome is a thrifty farmer, paying his chief attent ion to the raising of wheat, but also pays some attention to stock-raisin g. He is a member of the Methodist Church, and lives one mile a little sou theast of Hobart (IN) on his farm of 165 acres.
