Notes
a. Note:   This information came from Roger Bucher, from a lady in CA who is also seeking Bucher info. From Roger Bucher "Obituary - Augustine Bucher--died March 9, 1891. His suffering ended. Another venerable citizen is called to the spirit world. Another of the old and honored citizens of South Bend has been called to eternal rest. Mr. Augustine Bucher, of South Michigan Street, whose serious illness was noticed in yesterday's Post died last night at 11:15, aged 75 years, 6 months and 12 days. At the age of five years, he accompanied his parents to Baltimore, MD where they resided until he was 15 years of age. Then he moved to Wayne Co., Ohio where he was married to Miss Sophia Lock on January 7, 1841. In 1845, he and his wife came to South Bend (Indiana) where he resided until death called him hence. At the age of 16 years Mr. Bucher learned the mason's trade and followed that occupation, principally as a contractor, almost continuously from that time until three years ago, when he was compelled to abandon work in consequence of physical disability. Most of the time since then he has been afflicted with that dread disease cancer, suffering intense pain, which he endured with Christian resignation. Mr. Bucher united with the M.E. Church at the age of 25, and since then he has lived a noble Christian life, displaying in his consistent and exemplary career the virtuous attributes of a pure and undefiled religion. In every relation of life, as husband, father, citizen and friend -- Mr. Bucher evinced those admirable principles of mind and heart which won the regard of all those who knew him, and those who knew him best esteemed him most. His dieath, although at a ripe old age, will cause feelings of sincere regret. He was the father of nine children, seven of whom are still living. They are: Mrs. Will Ruthervord, Miss Lizzie Bucher, D.C. Bucher all of South Bend. Mrs. L. F. Colton, Mrs. C.A. Core and Will Bucher all of Oakland, Calif. In addition to these, he leaves two brothers and one sister -- Abram, of Baltimore, MD., Jacob of Wooster, Ohio and Mrs. Elizabeth McCloskey of La Porte, Indiana. The bereaved wife and children will have much sympathy in the loss of such an excellent husband and father. The funeral announcement will be made later. (Note that it mentions seven living children but lists only six)." Found Augustine Bucher in 1850 Census, Portage twp, St Joseph, Indiana, USA. Lists Augustine Bucher, age 31, Bricklayer, bp=Maryland,; Sophia, age 28, bp = Ohio; Elizabeth, age 8, bp=Ohio; George W., age 6, bp=OHio; John H, age 3, bp=Ind; Mary M, age 11/12, bp=Ind. This census was taken 13 Aug 1850, so I would say that Mary's birth month would be Sept., 1849. Found family in 1860 Census, South Bend, Portage twp, St Joseph County, Indiana, Film # 0803295 In this census, I read his age as 41, which would have put his birth at about 1819. This film was not very good to read. As per info from Walter Scott. Paper says : children (of Augustus) Jennie Rutherford, lived in South Bend, Indiana. Elizabeth (Lib) was a spinster. When asked why she didn't marry she would say, "Those I want won't have me, and those that want me I wouldn't have". She would say, "I'm feefty years old.", no matter how old she was.
