Note: ening, July 18, 1908, aged 82 years, 2 months and 28 days. His health had been gradually failing for the past year during which time he remained at home. Deceased was born near Holmesville, April 20, 1826, and was the son of Alexander D. Bell, a pioneer of Ohio. His mother was Irena Fairchild; a native of New Jersey. Mr. Bell was educated in the common and normal schools and at the age of 20 started in public life as a school teacher, which occupation he followed for seven summer and fourteen winter terms. In the summer of 1846, he and nine other Holmes county teachers met at Millersburg and organized the first Teachers' Institue and of these ten he was the last survivor. This institute up to the time of the breaking out of the civil war held regular spring and autumn meetings of five days duration, at different points in the county and did much in raising the standard of qualification of teachers. Mr Bell served as president and secretary of this institute during its entire existence. He read law with the late C. F Voorhes and John R. Barcroft and ever since his admission to the bar had practiced in Millersburg, being the oldest lawyer in the county. He had served as a notary public for nearly fifty-seven consecutive years. He served as Recorder of Homes county for two terms, and as Justice of the Peace of Hardy township for more than twenty years, and was a Justice of the the Peace at the time of his death. He was a fine penman and had probably written more deeds, mortgages and wills than any other man in the county. He was a Democrat of the Thomas Jefferson-Andrew Jackson school and a great admirer of William Jennings Bryan. On March 28, 1858, he was married to Miss Lucinda McKee, who survives him. Three children were born to this union, : Laura E, who died at the age of eighteen years, William A. Bell of Canton, Ohio, a prominent railroad man and Homer A. Bell of this place, the present Corporation Clerk. Deceased had been a member of the Royal Arcanum Lodge of this place since 1877 and had filled nearly every official position in the order. He united with the Christian church in 1848 under the teaching of a pious mother and ministry of evangelist Judson D Benedict, and was a firm believer in the doctrines of the church. He was probably as well known as any other man in the county and leaves many friends and relatives who will recall his memory. He is also survived by two brothers and three sisters,: N. D. Bell of this place, D. D. Bell of Cleveland, Mrs James Frake and Mrs. Harry Potter of Shreve and Mrs Thomas Bucher of Webb City, Missouri. The Funeral occurred Monday afternoon, services being conducted by Rev. H. E.
