Notes
a. Note:   Donald McBain Obituary
  Friday, June 21, 1907
 Obituary of Donald McBain
Donal McBain was born near Inverness, Scotland, August 13, 1854. At the age of eighteen he came to America, first settling near Brooklyn, in Poweshiek county, this state. From there he went to Gilman, Marshall county. He then went to Waterloo in Black Hawk county. Some twenty-five years ago he came to Grundy county near where Dike now stands. Here he followed the vocation of a famer until failing health would no longer permit him to engage in the pursuit, since which he has had his residence in Dike.
January 18, 1878 he was united in marriage with Miss Margaret Reed, of Gilman, Iowa. To them firve daughters were given: Josephine died some fourteen years ago, at the age of two years; Agnes was called to her reward September 22, 1908, at the age of fifteen. The living are Mrs. Frank Hargrove, Mrs. Will Reisinger, and Miss Susan, all of Dike. Besides there is an adopted son, Mr. Guinsey Schultz, also of Dike. There were six children in his father's family, all but two of whom are now deceased. The living are two brothers, who reside still in their fatherland.
Brother McBain was ever a public spirited man as such he was chosen by his fellow citizens to places of trust such as the school board and creamery. He cared for such interests with the best of his painstaking ability, with a conscienciousness that hsould be emulated by all who hold such positions.
Mr. McBain was brought up in the tenets of the Presbyterian faith, which clung to him all his life and fashioned it into a splendid manhood.
Fourteen years ago this month he was soundly converted in a meeting held by the Foote brothers and united with the Methodist Episcopal church at North Fork. When our church was organized in Dike seven years ago he became on of its charter members and has been one of its most loyal and painstaking supporters. By his death our board of stewards has lost one whose councils were ever to be depended upon as wholesome and helpful. His style was not "Go thou and do," but "Come let us do." He was a pillar in the church of God to the limit of his ability, but not of the narrow type. His vision took in the welfare of all men. The day before the opertaion we had a heart to heart talk on spiritual matter and among other things he said, "I wish everbody might be saved." In order to get the full meaning of what he wished to express in those words, you should have heard the tenderness with which they were expressed and seen the holly light that was in his face. At that time and a few times since, he spoke of the great goodness of God to him in that he had been so gracious as to save him from sin.
To my mind the leading characteristic of his Christian life was humility. This was manifested in his manner and words. his greatest trouble was that he could do so little for his master. I am persuaded that he did far more than he ever realized. I wonder how many there were who ever told him how his words and actions impressed them for good. In one of our last talks I tried to tell him what he had been to me and to you all. It seemed to refresh his soul so much that ever since I have been wondering why we did not long ago tell him in our tenderest words what we all felt in our hearts.
Something like three years since his health became broken and through a lingering and painful sickness he passed, unmurmuring to the end which came last Friday morning, June 14th, at a few minutes after nine when he quietly passed away. His age was 52 years, 10 m onths and 1 day.
Funeral services were conducted at the M. E. church in Dike on last Sunday morning by the pastor assisted by Rev. Earl Boadman. A large audience assembled in honor of the deceased. The interment was made in the Dike cemetery. T.
