Edmund Somers was a very active Quaker, and his name appears with regularity in the Mens Minutes of the Egg Harbor-Cape May Monthly Meeting of Friends beginning in 1727, when he was selected to attend the Monthly Meeting at the Quarterly Meeting at Haddonfield. He married, by lic. dated January 8, 1730, Mary Steelman (N.J.Archives,vol.22,p.363). Apparently, Mary was not yet a Quaker since at the Monthly Meeting held on 7 5mo. 1735 "Edmund Somers delivered a paper condeming the method of taking his wife it being out of unity of Friends Which paper was very well excepted by ye meeting." 3 ACHSYB 77. After making these amends, Edmund continued to be an active member of the meeting, and was frequently appointed to attend the Quarterly Meeting. Addiotonaly, in 1738/9 and again in 1739/40, Edmund Somers was appointed to attend the Meeting of Ministers and Elders. 3 ACHSYB 106, 108. At a 1758 Monthly Meeting, a testimonial was read about Edmund Somers, and five other deceased Ministers and Elders of the Egg Harbor Meeting. 4 ACHSYB 34. The birth dates of Edmund Somers children are recorded in the records of the Egg Harbour-Cape May Monthly Meeting of Friends. Abstract of will from 30 NJA 1st 447: 1743, Aug. 1. Somers, Edmund, of Egg Harbor, Gloucester Co.; will of. Wife, Mary, executrix, and to have whole estate until my son, Edmund, will be 21; at her decease plantation shall be his. Daughters-Hannah, Judith and Mary Somers (when 18) to have my land about "Mapel Swamp," together with 200 acres of marsh at Great Egg Harbor Inlet.
