Notes
a. Note:   Known as Blind Janie Collins her obit lists her mothers name as Ardena. notes on mary jane "blind janie" collins ellison by jackie ullom, 9/28/02 Blind Janie was blinded when thrown on a burning bush by Bushwackers. this was done by some people who didn't like her being a rounder. Paralee was involved in it also, and helped Janie off the bush before she was burned too badly. She was called "Blind Janie", and we are trying to find out if she was blind at birth or if it happened later on in life. She is referred to as "Blind Janie" by several researchers so it is put in the notes while we look for other information about it. According to information that Jackie has Janie and another girl were bound and set afire. That is what caused her to go blind. They were burned because they were, what they then called, "rounders". They like all the men and some of the people did not agree with it. Story told by Vernon Murrell. Post Office Postmasters and their Communities, Horton section. Vernon Murrell, who grew up in the Cordz community and later moved to Oklahoma, gave some interesting thoughts about Horton and a story told him by his grandfather. Lady Godiva of Horton. "She rode a horse through the town in the nude. He knew her. She was kind of a loose woman, naturally. I remember her daughter. The one that rode the horse was named Paralee. The vigilantes whipped her - the good guys. Grandpa said them good guys probably visited her once in a while, and I imagine they did. I can't remember her last name. Her daughter was a blind woman. She was old when I remember her. Janie was the daughter's name. That was while the town of Horton was still operating. I bleive this story is talking about Parlee Collins and Blind Janie Collins. Janie was Parlee's sister - in-law, not daughter. ***************** Taken from the West Plains Daily Quill Janie Ellison funeral tomorrow Funeral services for Janie Ellison, 86, West Plains, will be held tomorrow at 2 pm in the Carter Chapel, West Plains, with Elder Ira Johnson officiating. Wilma Collins Pierceall's memories of Blind Janie Collins Ellison: Was around Janie a lot as a kids. We went to visit them They shopped at our grocery store. I remember how strange it seemed for her to go in the kitchen and make coffee with no light on. She was very self suffiencet. I remember her being tall And yes she wore her hair up. I guess she did have some of Grandpa features. I remember her having a slim face,Soft spoken. Was probably as tall as my mom. Mom was 5-5. She was slim. always looked put together??? proper I guess you would say. I thought it was strange when she paid for her groceries and she knew the coins by the feel of them. Kept her bills separate and knew how to find them.
