Notes
a. Note:   West Plains Daily Quill Tues., Jan. 20, 1953 Man Arrested Last Night Held Here on Forgery Count Elick Collins, who told officers he has just been released from Missouri penitentiary, was arrested last night on forgery charge filed against him in magistrate court here by Russell Corn, Willow Springs merchant. Collins was brought to the county jail here last night by Trooper D.W. Ousley of the highway patrol and Walter Puckett, city marshall and deputy sheriff from Willow Springs. Arrest was made earlier last night by Sgt. Ear Barley, who found Collins at a church service four miles from Mountain Grove. Corn is the complaining witness in the case, alleging that Collins forged the name of Paul Murrell on a $10.75 check cashed at his store in Willow Springs Saturday evening. According to Corn, the check was drawn Saturday on the State Bank of Willow Springs, was made payable to Collins and was signed "Paul Merl." Corn said that Collins had purchased a package of cigarettes with the check, receiving the remaining change. The small purchase was made from Corn's daughter-in-law, who works in the store. Corn told the Quill today that when he first saw the signature, he thought something was wrong because of the way the last name was spelled. He said he checked with the State Bank was told that Paul Murrell had an account with them, but they had no account for Paul Merl. In a statement before the prosecuting attorney this morning, Collins said he had just been released from Missouri penitentiary where he served time on a charge of steeling mortgaged property. He also said he had served time at the Intermediate Reformatory at Algoa. Collins has been working in Kansas City but had come to Willow Springs for a visit, Corn stated. He said the defendant had a number of relatives in Howell and Wright counties. *************** West Plains Daily Quill, Monday, March 6, 1961 Paul Murrell of Willow Springs was scheduled to have a leg amputated today at Barnes Hospital in St Louis due to a circulatory ailment. His wife, Agnes and a son, Clyde Murrell are with him.
