Note: Rebecca was blind before she died. Information from Shari Ellison, [email protected]@yahoo.com and also from newspaper article about those receiving blind pensions. August 2003 1910 Howell Co., Missouri page 141 *************** Celebrated 104th Birthday Anniversary Few Days Before Her Death; Resident Of County Nearly 70 Years (from Thursdays Daily Quill) Mrs Rebecca Phillips, 104 years old, the oldest citizen of Howell County and one of the oldest also in the state, died at the home of her grandson, Ed Harris, seven miles northwest of West Plains yesterday afternoon, death being due to senility. "Grandma" Phillips, as she has been known for many years, had been a resident of Howell County for nearly seventy years, having come here from Tennessee before the Civil War with her husband, Tillman Phillips, who death occurred here many years ago. Grandma was born January 5, 1820, in Overton County, Tennessee, and celebrated her one hundred and fourth birthday only three weeks ago. Although she had been blind the last few years, and had been very frail as a result of a severe attack of influenza, from which she never fully recovered, she was always bright and cheerful. However, she felt that she had long since outlived her usefulness and she had for many months been eagerly awaiting her Master's call. It is difficult for the average person to realize the long span of years which have been Mrs Phillips'. She lived under the administration of all but four of the thirty presidents of the United States, and enjoyed the privilege of helping to elect the late President Harding. The day after Harding was elected she came to West Plains to cast her vote, and was one of the happiest voters seen at the polls. When she was born, James Monroe, the fifth president of the United States, was in office, and John Adams, the second president, was yet living. There was not a railroad in the United States at that time and her native state was still frontier country. She lived through four of the great wars in which the United States has been involved, and had seen her own people go out to help defend her country in all of them. In early pioneer days in Howell County, when there were few physicians and practically no nurses here, Grandma Phillps was one of the best known nurses in the county, and so she gave her services free, they were constantly in demand. She laid no claims to professional efficiency, but was always ready and willing to go wherever she was needed to care for the sick, and oftentimes acted as both doctor and nurse. The aged woman is survived by two daughters, Mrs Nancy Christenson, who resides at the Harris home, Mrs Brown, who also resides near West Plains, and one son, Moses Phillips, who resides at Batesville, Ark. Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at the Harris home. Info that I have says that Tillman died in 1918, but according to the 1900, 1910 and 1920 census, he passed before 1900, as Rebecca was listed as a widow in all three.
