Notes
a. Note:   source of birth: pension papers source of death: pension papers was in Company E in the Civil War. In pension papers, Peter states "St Anthonys Fire and the fever fell in my eye and put it out." He was told "if I went west it might get better," He suffered from chronic diarrhea and "neuralgia in the head." The right eye was eventually removed (Aug 1876) and he became totally blind. Peter apparently abandoned his wife Elizabeth in Kansas and came back and married again without a divorce or death occuring. It is implied in the pension papers that folks got the impression that he had heard from his former soldier friends that she was coming back to Illinois from Kansas to confront him. (they might have been joking just to bother him). Supposedly, that was when he decided to leave for Kentucky by way of Indian with Emma. It looks like he was running to avoid the wife he knew was still alive. As luck would have it, she soon died in Kansas, never returning to Illinois. The widows pension was denied on Peter because he was never divorced and the second wife was still verified alive (by her daughters still living in Kansas) at the time of his marriage to Emma.
