Note: 919, and passed away at Shannondale Retirement Center in Maryville, Tennessee, on March 1, 2009. He was preceded in deaath by his parents, William and Amelia Gissel, and by brother, William Y. Gissel of Oak Ridge, and David S. Gissel of Metairie, Louisiana. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marguerite Charlet Gissel, by a sister and brother-in-law, Betsy and Bob Dombourian of Metairie, Louisiana, and by four children, Julian R. Gissel, Jr. and his wife, Betty, of Knoxville, by Deane Gray and her husband, John of Greeneville, Tennessee, by Dr. Philip C. Gissel and his wive Nancy of Eugene, Oregon, and by Katherine robinson and her husband, John of Kernersville, North Carolina. He also leaves nine grandchildren and on great grandson. Mr. Gissel grew up in Metairie, Louisiana. He attended Louisiana State University and granduated in 1942 with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. He was an officer in the Corp of Cadets, Tau Beta Pi, engineering honor society, and Alpha Tau Omega, social fraternity. After graduation, he served in the U.S. Army in Europe until 1945 and was recognized for distinguished service when he received the Bronze Star as a captain in the combat field artillery. He returned to the United States and was sent to Northwestern University in Illinois for one year graduate engineering study. He was a licenses professional engineer. Julian and Marguerite were married in July 1945 in Labadieville, Louisiana. They moved to Oak Ridge, Tennessee in December 1949 where he was employed at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory until his retirement in 1985. For many years, Julian served as a board member and officer of the ORNL Federal Credit Union. After his retirement, he volunteered at the Karns Volunteer Fire Department and Oak Ridge Methodist Hospital. Julian always enjoyed his family, along with many friends in duplicate bridge, square dancing and ballroom dancing, as well as travel in many countries around the world. A favorite family activity was boating on nearby TVA lakes. In 2005 he and Marguerite moved to Shannondale Retirement Center in Maryville and are members of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Alcoa. A memorial service will be announced later.
