Note: The Westerly Star, 28 Jan 2004: Commander Alfred Moss Roberts Jr., USNR, a long-time summer resident of Watch Hill, died, following a short illness, Jan. 17, 2004,at Jacksonville Beach, Fla., where he resided. He was 89 years of age. CMDR Roberts was born in Buffalo, N.Y., Nov. 25, 1914, the son of the late Alfred Moss Roberts and Ethelind Knapp Roberts. He was raised and educated in Baltimore, Md., and was appointed to the U. S. Naval Academy, at Annapolis. He entered with the class of 1938, but subsequently withdrew and was appointed to the U. S. Military Academy, at West Point. After four years in the Army, he returned to the Navy as a flyer. In World War II, he served as Senior Fleet Aviator. Central Pacific, Cruisers, with the rank of Commander. shot down at Wake Island, October 1942, he was awarded the Silver Star and the Purple Heart. In 1970 CMDR Roberts married the former Dorothy Hiett, who survives him. At Watch Hill, CMDR Roberts served the Watch Hill Fire District as a member of its Board of Fire Wards. He was a member of The Misquamicut Club and the Watch Hill Yacht Club. He was also a member of the Explorers Club, New York. A Memborial service will be held in Watch Hill in the summer.
