Charles7 and Emma (Jones) Whit-man of Waco, Tex.; m. 30 June 1915 Waco, Tex Davis Robert Gurley, 111 (b.17 Oct. 1871 Waco, Tex., d. 18 Jan. 1932 Waco, Tex.), son of Davis R., 11 and Loulie (Earle) Gurley of Waco, Tex.; - 4 c. Mr. Gurley attended Baylor University and graduated from Texas A. and M. College in 1891. He assisted his father at the Gurley plantation, and his father gave the land for Third Street Baptist Church which Rev. Charles Whitman organized in 1910. After marriage, Mr. Gurley owned several farms in McLennan County, real estate properties in Waco, and was a founder and Chairman of Liberty National Bank. He was a member of the Philo Club, Waco Boating and Fishing Club, and seryed on the boards of several central Texas mercantile firms. He died in 1932 and was huried in Oakwood Cemetery, which originally had been part of the old Gurley plantation. Mrs. Gurley attended the University of Texas and taught school in Waco after-ward~ She was an organizer of the Waco Boys' Club in 1912, and in the 1930s was the second woman to be elected to the Waco School Board. She taught the adult Women's Sunday School class at First Baptist Church for many years, and served as a president of the Waco Literary Club. After Mr. Gurley's death, she received her Master's degree from Baylor and became an assistant professor in the Geology and English departments. Later, she seryed as Executive Secretary of the Baylor Centennial Foundation which raised funds for an alumni building on campus. She taught in the Military Department at Baylor during World War li, and after retirement, moved to California to reside with her daughter, Mrs. Albert Ralphs. She died there in 1984, at age 97, but was buried in Oakwood Cemetery at Waco beside her husband. Issue: i. Nell Sue9 Gurley (1916-1978) m. John G. Beasley, Jr. ii.
