There are many American Indians in the area with the Bailey--Winnibago, Sioux and Chippewa. The area was filled in its early days with New Yorkers and New Englanders who came as the result of the conclusion of the 1812 War. Among them were many Baileys. Asa also bought land in the Toledo Strip in Michigan area in May of 1839 and again in Kalamazoo area in 1839. He left Wisconsin in anticipation of the Homstead Act passed on Jan 1,1863 to acquire more land in Nebraska.
