In his autobiography, W. E B. Dubois states that his great-grandfather was James Dubois, a physician from Poughkeepsie, New York, descended in the 5th generation from Jacques Dubois of France. This James Dubois, a Loyalist, possibly born in the 1750s, was granted land in the Bahamas by the British after the Revolution. No records of his birth or baptism have been located.
Lewis says that James Dubois had cousins, the Gilberts, with land in the Bahamas and Haiti. James returned to NY in about 1812.
James Dubois, late of the Bahamas, died in Newburgh, New York in 1815.
