Notes
a. Note:   Probably named after a member of the Jessee Jackson family with whom Rebecca and John W. lived in Franklin County, Alabama in 1870, family lore and recollections hold that he preferred the name Colonel and was referred to as Uncle Colonel by the grandchildren of John and Malinda. His daughter, Audry Wilkerson Van Skiver, told me on April 30, 2001 that soon after they were married Colonel and Bertie lived in a barn behind John Wilkerson, Sr. which had been converted into a house. (From the date of birth she gave me, she was born two weeks before Colonel and Bertie were married) Obituary: COLONEL J. WILKERSON SR 79, of Bryant, street superintendent for Bryant, died Monday. Mr. Wilkerson was a member of Bryant United Methodist Church and was the first employee of the City Water Department when it was completed in 1957. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Bertie Wilkerson; five sons, C.J. Wilkerson, Jr ., Arvil Wilkerson and Roger Wilkerson, all of Bryant, Austin Wilkerson of Texas and Donald Wilkerson of Florida; four daughters, Mrs. Audra VanSkiver and Mrs. Redith Waters, both of Little Rock, Mrs. Hazel White of Benton, Mrs. Fern Louallen of Bryant; two brothers, Matthew Wilkerson of Little Rock and Luther Wilkerson of Bryant; 21 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Funeral will be at I p.m. Thursday at Ash by Funeral Home. Burial will be in Salem Cemetery. May 20, 1974.
