  Baltus Pickle Family Bible
The Bible of Baltus Pickle is owned by Mr. J. W. Pickel of Union Corners, Williams Co., Ohio. It has a loose cover that has allowed the outer pages, including the title page, to be destroyed. The New Testament title page indicates that it was published in Edinburgh in 1773. A copy of the family record in the Bible was transmitted to Kenn Stryker-Rodda by Mrs. Ella (Mehrling) Vick of Salem, Oregon, along with the following family information.
"Joseph Pickel was the 4th child of Balthaser and Catherine McClow Pickel. Soon after his mother's death he was bound out to a cruel shoemaker to learn the trade. But at the age of 14, he ran away and went to Penn., where he made his home with his aunt and uncle, Eva Pickel and Abraham Van Horn. Here he became a veterinary surgeon. About 1817 he married Lanah Campbell of Northumberland Co., Penn., She was the daughter of Lieut. Benjamin Campbell and his wife. They lived in Delaware Co., Fulton Co., and later Williams Co., Ohio. He died Dec. 14, 1862 aged 66 years, 8 months, and 16 days, and his tombstone is in Eagle Creek Cemetery, Williams Co., Ohio. His children were:
  1) Benjamin Campbell Pickel, born Feb. 22, 1818. He married Olive Benson, daughter of Silas Benson, and went to Williams Co. to teach school. His enthusiasm for the neighborhood soon caused the rest of his family to also settle there. He bought a large farm where he made "purls of ashes" and shipped them to New York City to be used in making soap.
  2) Joanna Pickel, born Jan. 25, 1819, married Parmenius Darius Benson. After her husband's death she studied medicine and practiced in Sedalia, Mo. and Coldwater, Mich.
  3) William Pickel, went west during the gold rush.
  4) Abraham Pickel, married Louisa Combs and lived near West Unity, Ohio.
  5) Joseph Jackson Pickel, married Sarah Ann Knapp, who was the daughter of Jacob and Patty Knapp, who cared for Major Daniel Benson in his old age.
Baltus Pickle was the son of Baltes Pickle and Sophia Van Horne of Whitehouse, New Jersey. A short and inadequate outline of the Pickle family appears in Chambers' Early Germans of New Jersey, page 462. No. 3241 of the GSNJ Family Record Collection.

There have been some corrections to this in fact Sarah Ann Knapp was the granddaughter according to family who descended directly from this line. "Your note on the site refers to information about Sarah's parents, That should be "grandparent's." from: Wyatt Knapp <[email protected]>.
I would take this to be fact since transcribed records have found to be incorrect at times.
