The Beales of Kent County England
"The Beales of Maidstone derived from William Beale "Port Reeve" of that Borough, at the close of the 14th Century.
In early English times, after the conquest the chief magistrate of London was styled "Port Reeve." He was Sheriff of the Port, a very important official.
In early times, the "port Reeve" was the representative of the Crown, having authority over a mercantile town, and specially charged with the maintenance of order in the crowded bustling communities and also with the collection of the Royal Revenue therein."
