 Rev. Silas R. Snapp grew up near Slanes Crossroads, Hampshire County, West Virginia.
 With the outbreak of the war between the North and the South he espoused the cause of the Confederacy, and subsequently entered it's army, but did not see active service.
 A man of fine mentality, although given but few educational opportunities, he studied by himself to such good effect that In 1868 he entered the Methodist Conference of West Virginia, and subsequently that of the Baltimore Southern Methodist Conference, continuing with the latter until his death, which occurred. in March, 1895, when he was about sixty-five years old.
 During the many years he was in the ministry he was stationed at different points In Virginia, and spent some time at Port Republic, where his son Robert completed his high school training.
 -
 There is a record of a S. R. Snapp who entered the 51st. Virginia Militia, Co. D, as a Private, and left as a 1st. Seargent.

 Highland Lodge No. 110 A.F. & A.M. formed in 1869
  Editor’s note: The following article was gleaned from the August 29, 1947 edition of The Recorder. H.B. Wood was editor and publisher.
 The Masonic Building in Monterey is 100 years old this year. (Recorder photo by James Jacenich) MONTEREY - Highland Lodge was organized May 20, 1869. The following were appointed by Acting Worshipful Master J.C. Newman to serve as officers for the ensuing year: A.W. Campbell, senior warden; William M. Chew, junior warden; Peter H. Kinkead, treasurer; G.W. Fraley, secretary; John S. McNulty, senior deacon; William Kinkead, junior deacon; Konrad Kramer, Tiler and stewart.
  The lodge operated under special dispensation of the grand lodge of Virginia, until in December of that year, when it received its official charter from the Grand Lodge of Virginia, same bearing date of Dec. 10, 1869.
  The following were charter members of the lodge: J.C. Newman, A.W. Campbell, William M. Chew, G.W. Fraley, Peter H. Kinkead, Konrad Kramer, William Kinkead, S.A. Gilmore, Sam’l A. Wilson, Jesse M.
