a. Note:   Pvt Joseph Asbury Hayter:
 Birth: 1840
 Indiana, USA
 Death: Aug. 23, 1863
 Carrollton
 Orleans Parish
 Louisiana, USA
First husband of Eliza Jane (Farmer) Hayter Lantz McVay (1839-1897). Father of William Hayter (1860-1904). Joseph was the son of William T. Hayter and Zillah (Swank) Hayter. He was a veteran of the Civil War. Joseph enlisted in Co. C., 28th Iowa Infantry on September 22, 1862. His Civil War documents indicate that he died of disease in Carrollton, Louisiana on August 23, 1863, however, there may be an error in the records as his wife applied for widow's pension in July of 1863. Joseph fought in the battle of Vicksburg. He died at age 23.
