Note: Henry ran a cigar shop in the city of Ogdensburg, St. Lawrence Co., New York. According to his grandson Henry Reid Paige, the cigars in the shop were made by hand. - The 1860 census finds Henry living as a single man in Ogdensburg, St. Lawrence Co., New York, as follows: H. A. Reed, 25, male, Tobacco Store, $100 real estate, $3000 personal wealth, b. Canada. SOURCE: 1st. Ward Ogdensburg, St. Lawrence Co., New York, Roll 854 Book 1, Page 283. - The 1870 Oswegatchie, St. Lawrence Co., New York census finds Henry A. (Read) age 35, a cigar manufacturer with an estimated land value of $12,000 and personal property valued at $6,000, it goes on to state he was born in Canada. Henry's wife Sarah M. (28) and two young sons Henry N. (4) and James W. (2 ) were living with him, along with his mother Mary (60) from Ireland and a James H. (Read) age 16. This James H. Read leads me to believe our Henry A. Read may have had children of a previous marriage and the 7 year age difference between Henry and Sarah could indicate this possibility. - 1872 Ogdensburg Directory: Reed Henry A., tobacconist, 70 Ford, h 4 Mill - 1873-74 St Lawrence Co. Henry is still employed as a cigar maker at age 65 he stated his father was born in New York and his mother was born in Ireland, he himself was born in Canada. He stated he and Sarah had been married for 34 years and 3 of the 4 children born to the were still living in 1900 (son Henry having died in 1899). - 1910 finds Henry and family as follows: Reed, Henry A., head, male, white, age 75, Married 45 yrs., b. NY, father b. NY, mother b. NY Ward T. Paige, grand-son, age 6, b. NY, father b. NY, mother b. NY - From "The Ogdensburg Republican Journal" (august 7, 1920): HENRY REED PASSES AWAY IN 86TH YEAR. Was Citizen of Sterling Worth and Had Many LoyaL Friends. Funeral services for the late Henry Alexander Reed, whose death at his home, 4 Mill street, on Thursday evening was briefly mentioned in yesterday's issue, will be held at the house on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. under Masonic auspices. Services will he conducted by Rev. John Mitchell, pastor of the Baptist church, in the absence of REV. S. S. Davies of the Methodist church, who is away on his vacation. Interment will be made in the family plot in the Ogdensburg cemetery. In the death of Mr. Reed Ogdensburg loses a citizen of high type, his family a loyal and devoted husband and father, and his friends a man whose attachments were always sincere and steadfast. Possessing a keen, well balanced intellect, he was a man whose views were always listened to with respect and at times found ready acquaintance from those who heard him speak. As a member of the Board of Education and the Board of Supervisors in early years of the city, he served his fellow citizens faithfully and well. Mr. Reed was born at Ramsey, Canada, Nov. 21, 1831. He came to Ogdensburg at the age of 16 years and entered the employ of the late, C. P. Clark, with whom he learned the trade as cigar maker. He entered business for himself at the age of 20 years and continued for forty years, retiring at the age of 60. He conducted a general cigar and tobacco business and was highly successful. He was married flfty-five years ago to Sarah Tallman, daughter of Nathan Tallman of Black Lake, who survives him, also two daughters, Mrs. Fred S. Paige of this city and Mrs. Henry Stevens of Brier Hill. Although not a regular church member, Mr. Reed in early life affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal church, but later on when the Congregational church was organized in the Second ward, he contributed toward its support, though continuing his connection with the Methodist society. Mr. Reed was the last member of his family. He had lived at 4 Mill street continuously for over 55 years and was one of the best known and most respected residents of the west side. Mr. Reed was one of the oldest Masons in, New York state and probably the oldest in Ogdensburg. He was for forty years the secretary of Ogdensburg Chapter No. 63, Royal Arch Masons, and also was a member of Ogdensburg Lodge No. 128. Deeply interested in the affairs of the order, he rarely missed a meeting of his lodges, and until his infirmities prevented was a daily visitor at the Masonic club. Mr. Reed was a life-long Republican and was one of the oldest subscribers of The Republican Journal. He took an active interest in education matters and served on the Board of Education several terms as a representative from the Second ward. He also served on the Board of Supervisors many years ago. - Funeral of Henry A, Reed. Ogdensburg, August 7. The funeral ofthe late Henry A. Reed, whose death occured at 4 Mill street Thursday evening, will be held there Sunday afternoon at 1:30 with Masonic honors. Services will be conducted by Rev. John Mitchell. The Masonic fraternity was in charge and the burial was with the honors of the order. Services at the house were in charge of Rev. John Mitchell, and at the grave the ritual was given by officers of Ogdensburg Lodge No. 128, F. & A. M. The pall bearers were H. H. Reed, W. H. Plumb, Fred Loveless, and Thomas Richards, members of the Masonic Order.
