Notes
a. Note:   Perley was raised in the Russell-Clare section of New York where he gained an intimate knowledge of the woods and lumbering. In his early 20's (about 1893) Perley ventured west for a short time as is recorded in a small "autograph" book, where many of his family and friends recorded their thoughts and feelings about the pending journey. He returned to New York and took up farming for a while, and eventually began working with the St. Lawrence Co. Pulp & Lumber Business. He was employed as a "lumber scaler," a job that would take him to the various lumber camps. He would walk the skids and estimate the board feet for the company, this in turn was used as a guage to pay the men in the camps. Perley was said to have been very familiar with the lumber trade and did on occasion use some of the colorful language common in such "all men" trades. At this time the family was living in San Fidel, Canada. In about 1920 Perley retired to Canton, New York to make his home. He purchased the home of Reuben T. Wells on East Main St. where he remained until later in life when he removed to Gouverneur St. In retirement Perley ran a Gas & Oil Service Station on Riverside Dr. Perley was a member of the No. 111, Free and Accepted Masons of St. Lawrence Chapter No. 132 , R. A. M., and St. Lawrence Commandery No. 28, Knights Templar. He was buried in 1942 in Fairview Cemetery, Canton, St. Lawrence, New York.

Silver Hill Fife and Drum Corps.
The following interesting account of a fife and drum corps in the town of Russell was submitted for this column by Mrs. Dorothy Manning, Town Historian.
The old Silver Hill Fife and Drum Corps was composed of nine men from the Silver Hill community of Russell about 65 years ago. The members were Peter Clintsman, drum major; Joseph Van Sant, Stephen Van Sant, Charles Brundage, and Pearl Brundage, snare drummers; William Van Sant and John Van Sant, fife players; Richard Van Sant, bass drummer. George Van Sant drove the corps wagon which was circular in shape and drawn by four horses.
Every Memorial Day the corps would start early in the morning and decorate the graves at the South Russell Cemetery and then come to the village and decorate the graves at the Russell Cemetery and lastly to Hermon Cemetery where they also decorated.
The corps was active for about fifty years, turning out to all military funerals and other community activities.
There are only two of the members still living, they are Joseph Van Sant of Russell and John Van Sant of Mexico, N.Y.

Spent Early Years In Lumbering, Made Home In Canton During Recent Years.
 -
Perley J. Brundage, a resident of Canton for the past twenty years, passed away at his home, Gouverneur Street, Sunday morning, after an illness of several months. In late March he entered Hepburn Hospital, Ogdensburg, where his condition failed to im prove. He suffered from an incurable malady. He was brought to his home, 11, Gouverneur street, a few days ago, and his condition continued to decline.
Funeral services willbe conducted at the home this afternoon at 2:30. Burial will be made at Fairview Cemetery. Masonic ritualistic services were conducted at the home last evening,
He was born in the town of Russell on April 25, 1871, a son of the late Colonel Charles R. an Anna Brundage. He spent his early
life in the Russell-Clare section, where he gained an intimate knowledge of the woods and lumbering. Several years ago he was engaged for some time in Canada in the Interest ofa St. Lawrence County pulp and lumber business. On retiring from that he came to Canton to make his home, purchasing the Reube T. Wells house on East Main street where his home was until quite recently when he removed to Gouverneur street.
During recent years he was engaged in the gas and oil business, running a service station on Riverside Drive.
Mr. Brundage was married three times. His first wife was Addie Clintsman of Russell, who died several years ago. While he was engaged in the Canadian enterprise he married Miss Margaret Phalon, R. N., of Canton. She passed within quite recent years. His third marriage Mrs. Mary Tobin Dishaw of Canton who survives him.
It is Interesting that his father, Lieutenant Colonel Charles R.
Brundage, was a veteran of the Civil War, serving with the 60th New York Volunteers, a Canton regiment, that of Colonel William
 B. Goodrich, who lost his life at Antietam, and his body was brought to Canton for burial. Of this regiment were such men as general Lester L. Wilson, also of Canton, and Abel Goddard of DeKalb who had a notable political career after the Civil War, to be finally "unhorsed" by General Edwin A. Merritt of Potsdam.
Mr. Brundage was a member of the St Lawrence Lodge No. 111, Free and Accepted Masons; St. Lawrence Chapter No. 132, R. A. M., and St. Lawrence Commandery, No. 28, Knights Templar.
Mr. Brundage leaves besides his widow, four sons and daughters by his first marriage, as follows: Mrs. Howard (Vincie Nash of Canton; Mrs Gladys Paige, Quantico Va.; Gaylor Brundage, of Cleveland, O., and Kenneth Brundage of Canton.
