 He was a farmer by trade. During the Civil War Charles had one of his favorite saddles hidden for him by one of his servants as the Union soldiers raided the family home.

 At Wars end Charles found himself with barrels of useless Confederate money currency, most of which was valueless and burned. Some remains in the family today.

 The 1870 census finds Charles living in Elk Run Township, Rockingham Co., Virginia (Roll 1676 Book 1, Page 95a).

 Charles tragically fell to his death while working in the loft of his barn. His obituary follows:

 EXCHANGE NOTES
 Harrisonburg Spirit: On Thursday October 8, Mr. Charles Harnsberger, a well known farmer residing in the Elkton neighborhood, met a singular death. He went to the barn to fix a place for some corn which was to be hauled in.
 About two hours afterwards some of the family found him lying upon tbe lower floor in an un-conscious condition, his skull being cracked and blood oozing from his ears and nose. His hat was fonnd in flu-mow or room above, and it is supposed that in moving about he stepped backwards and fell through a hole in the upper floor, a sort of trap door, to the floor below.
