a. Note:   He was the youngest son. He was born two years after slavery was over.
 Grew up on the Howell farm. His mother died when he was about three years old. He was raised by his father, Nelson, and his father's wife, Cornelia.
 Nelson lived in Seaboard, North Carolina most of his life.
 He was a sharecropper for Bill Braddie. He married Sarah Davis at the Braddie Farm. The Braddie Family had the wedding in the living room of their home. The wedding was blue and white tapestry.
 He was taught how to read and write by a man who was interested in teaching him to read and write. He would talk to his children by the fireplace every evening about being responsible and family.
 He was a short, medium-build, dark-skinned man. He was married to his wife for forty-one years when she died in 1935. He died nine years later, 1944, in his bed at home. He was buried in the Brassey Cemetery according to his death certificate.
