a. Note:   She was the daughter of Sarah Mitchell and Joseph Demory. She was born in August 1849 in Occoneeche Neck, North Carolina. She was born a free-woman. She lived a prosperous life in Jackson, North Carolina.
 She met George Rawls, a slave on the Lockhart farm. They wanted to get married to each other. The slave master, Benjamin Franklin Lockhart said that if Adriana married George Rawls, by law she would become a slave. If they had any children, they would become slaves. She decided to have a secret wedding and never to tell the slave master, and keep all parties silent. They had a daughter, Sarah Demory in 1865.
