a. Note:   Charles was a life-long Democrat. He refused to speak (along with brother George, also a Democrat) to his older brother Thomas, who was a Republican. -RDR 10/02
Mystery solved: Much speculation had surrounded the mystery of Charles' loss of his left arm. My father claims that Charles would never tell him. Charles Aydelott Russell of Buchanan, ND (Charles Arthur's grandnephew) revealed that he lost his arm in a train yard coupling accident in Newton, IA as a youth.
It seems that when Don and Emma Russell were casting about for names for their second child, Charles seemed a good choice; but what about a middle name? After much deliberation they settled on the middle name of Arthur. It seemed to fit well with Charles. Several weeks after the birth (and naming) of Charles Arthur Russell, Don and Emma received a letter from Don's Uncle Charlie - in it was a twenty-dollar bill - and a note of appreciation for naming the child after him. The proud parents were chagrined - they had never known what Uncle Charlie's middle name was, and they certainly didn't consciously name their baby after his great Uncle. However, for the sake of all concerned, they responded with a thank you letter, and in the interest of peace in the family never did admit to Uncle Charlie that it was all a serendipitous happenstance. PS: They kept the twenty. -RDR 10/02
