Notes
a. Note:   Ages of William's children are estimates. In the Heads of Household census of 1784-85 (Cumberland County, VA) he is credited with a total of eight individuals. Counting himself and 1st wife Elizabeth - that means 6 children at home in 1784-85. In 1810 he is shown with 9 free individuals and 9 slaves. The census shows the following: (WM under 10 = 1, WM 10-15 = 1, WM over 45 = 1, WF under 10 = 1, WF 16-25 = 4, WF 26-44 = 1) = 9 (Thomas and Polly had moved away) and 9 slaves.
By 1810 he was married for the second time to Tabitha Barnes; Tabitha had been married previously to a Thomas B. Drake. It is not known what children, if any, she brought to her marriage with William. William does not show up on the 1820 census - he died in 1813, however there is a record of a Nancy Russell, as a Head of Household, with two younger children in residence; very likely his daughter by Elizabeth. The Federal Census of 1880 shows his daughters by Tabitha: Terese Russell Thomas and Eliza Russell Oldaker, both living in Union Township, Highland County, Ohio with their families. Both quite elderly. Son Samuel's (d. 1876) wife, Mary Duncan Russell, is living in Buena Vista Township, Jasper County, Iowa, with her son Samuel Garnet Russell and family.
Samuel Garnet Russell's 1912 biography states that his Grandfather (William) was a "hero of the Revolutionary War". There were two famous William Russell's in the war, of which much has been written - Gen. William Russell and his son Colonel William Russell, both from Culpepper County, Virginia. I can find no direct relationship. Our William Russell was a "Matross" (a Gunners' assistant) in the War. He may have been a hero, but he had a rather low military rank.
Perhaps the best record we have of William Russell and his family comes to us from the estate litigation filed in Cumberland County in 1813. See "William Russell's Estate" in the Stories section. -DR
