Note: Hattie was rendered deaf as an infant from a bout of dyptheria, as a result she could not speak - My father, George William Russell, remembers spending a great deal of time with his Aunt Hattie. Although she couldn't hear or speak, Hattie was a consummate lip-reader (and a Hell of a card player). Dad tells of going to see silent films with her and she would be cackling in glee before the captions emerged on the screen. She had already lip-read the actors. -RDR 12/02
