Notes
a. Note:   Parentage of James Henry Rosenberger:
"The records of Shenandoah County, VA, show clearly that Joseph Rosenberger was married to Mary Grady, daughter of William Grady, in 1805. The Shenandoah County marriage bond records show a bond, dated February 27, 1805, for Joseph Rosenberger and Mary Grady, the daughter of William. The marriage registry carries an entry by Anderson Moffitt that 'I hereby certify that Joseph Rosenberger and Mary Grady are lawfully married by License given under my hand this 3rd day of March, 1805.' There is even a record of consent note from William Grady setting forth that 'I do agree to let Joseph Rosenberger have my daughter, as I am willing for her to get married' " -from "The Descendants of James Henry Rosenberger" by William Lindley, 1958
There was some talk that the wife of Joseph was not Mary Grady, but Mary "McElwee". William Lindley asserts that much effort was put into a search for a surname "McElwee", but was unsuccessful. He suggests that Joseph Rosenberger was married twice. Mr. Lindley found that the name "McElwee" appears in a small notebook of family records, captioned: "Rosenberger tree beginning with Absalom Rosenberger's grandparents Joseph and Mary McElwee Rosenberger who lived in the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia." The first entry in this notebook is: "Joseph Rosenberger m. Mary McElwee, she lived to the age of 110 years." Mr. Lindley notes that the entries in the notebook were written in the same hand and with the same ink - and includes births as late as the 1930's. These notes were written by Absalom Rosenberger's second wife Florabelle Patterson Rosenberger, who would have little knowledge of Absalom's grandmother's maiden name. Mr. Lindley ascribes this discrepancy to an error of memory.
I understand Mr. Lindley's reticence to apply the McElwee surname to Absalom's grandmother. But I believe he was short-sighted in only assuming that Joseph may have been twice married - Mary Grady could, herself, have been married before, and judging from earlier searches for family surnames, it could be imagined that "McElwee" was the middle name of Mary Grady. Any of these possibilities may be true. Future research, I hope, may clear up this matter. -RDR 9/02
