Notes
a. Note:   "Wilbert" in will of his father. Elsewhere "William" or "Winfield" ("Winfie") . [General Winfield Scott ran for President in 1852, and lost, W. Scott Rutter was born 1851.] Called Winfie in 1880 Census. Perhaps the final word, from Paul Stauffer, Jr., of Altoona, PA, as told to Anna (Rutter) Shingler, is that h is real name was Wilbert, which he hated, so called himself William, even though he had a brother William. By this scenario the Winfie in 1880 was just another attempt to avoid his real name. According to his grandson, Paul Trevaskis Rutter, he worked in coal mines near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was hit on his head by a piece of slate, taken by his minister to a hospital in Philadelphia, but infection set in and he died. He was a Methodist, and belonged to Washington Camp, No. 374, P.O.S. of A., Orbisonia.
As reported in the Huntingdon Globe dated 25 May 1911, at the time of his death surviving children were: Rev. Dorsey Howard of Daytona Beach, FL; David of Turtle Creek, PA; Mrs. C.V. Chilcote and Miss Eva Rutter, both of Wilmerding, PA; Glen, Pearl, and Hubert (Herbert) at home. Also surviving were siblings: Judson of Pogue, William of Meadow Gap, Luther of Rockhill, Samuel of Mt. Union, all in PA; Mrs. Rachel Booher of Pinca (Ponca?) City, OK; Mrs. George Rabenstein of Rockhill; Miss Hannah Rutter of Meadow Gap.
