Toussaint Beland was born about 1795. I have 2 census's that say he was born in France and 1 that says Canada. From new information I have received, I believe he was born in Quebec. I plan to confirm this with a trip to the town archives this spring. He died on 25 Apr 1890 in Peacham, Vermont and is buried in the Peacham Corners Cemetery. He used the Englsih version of his name (Allsaints) when he came to Vermont. His gravestone is listed as Allsaints Balaw. Elizabeth Tourcotte (I see others list her as Isabelle as well) was born on 4 May 1803 in La Baie, Quebec and died 26 Aug 1865 in Peacham. She is buried next to Allsaints. Elizabeth & Allsaints had 10 children together, 5 boys & 5 girls. All of the boys fought in the Civil War: 1) Simeon Bailaw b. 18 Feb 1826 in Trois Rivieres, PQ, Canada and died 23 Feb 1863. He married Mary M King on 10 Oct 1847 in Quebec. I have info on Mary & their children if you would like it as well. He was taken prisoner during the war and later released. He was discharged from the military due to illness. Family story says he was only to eat a broth diet, but one night Mary made beef stew and the smell was too tempting. Simeon ate the meat and died soon after. He'd been home from war for about 2 months. 2) Margaret Bailaw b. 1 Jan 1828 in Quebec and died 20 Jan 1910. She married Robert Sanderson. 3) Alexander Bailaw b. 28 Apr 1830 in Quebec and died 10 Feb 1921. 4) Olive Bailaw (Bailey) b. 13 Mar 1832 in Quebec. 5) Joseph Bailaw b. 12 May 1835 in Quebec and died 4 Apr 1865. He married Clara Hall. I have some info on his children as well. He was wounded in a battle in Petersburg, Virginia on 25 Mar 1865 and died later on due to his injury. He is buried in the Arlington National Cemetery. 6) William Bailaw b. 9 May 1837. He married Elsina Huntington. I have some info on his children. He deserted the military twice and never returned after the 2nd desertion. 7) Edward Bailaw (my gg-grandfather) b. 4 Jan 1840 in Quebec and died in 1924. He married Mary King after his brother, Simeon, died. They had 1 son together (have this info). After Mary's death, he resided with a woman (can't make out her name on either census) and they had a daughter (my great-grandmother). 8) Anna Maria Bailaw b. 26 May 1841 in Quebec. She married an unknown Atkins. Story goes that she was Native American and his family (who were white) disowned him for marrying her. I do know when the whites began taking over land in the states, many Native Americans moved to Canada and took on French names. This is another lead I plan to follow up on soon. 9) Elizabeth Bailaw b. 2 Jun 1843 in Quebec and married an unknown Hooker. 10) Lucy Bailaw b. 11 Jun 1846 in Quebec and married an unknown Leslie. I am attaching some census info & tombstone pics that I have. All of these graves are in the Peacham Corners Cemetery.
