Milholland under the general heading "Old Times in and Around Elizabethfown" appears elsewhere in this issue of the Record-Post, "The Voice of the Master" being the specific subject treated. "The Voice of the" Master" in this case was that of a son of Elizabethtown, who became one of the best horsemen Northern New York ever produced, and the article should be read with interest by all who knew Alembert James Durand who died in April, 1920, in his 82d year. "Lem," as he was almost universally known, was a far-famed horse trainer, having few equals and no superiors in his prime. He was born and reared on "Durand Farm in Elizabethtown, being a grandson of the late Joseph Francis Durand who served in the Colonial army during the American Revolution. Lem, as he was locally and familiarly known, served in Company C, 7th Vermont Regiment, in the late Civil War the colonel having been the late William C. Holbrook, son of Vermont's famous war governor. Colonel William C. Holbrook became Judge Hoolbrook of New York city after the Civil War. He was a tall, fine lookmg. man and closely resembled "Lem" in Civil War days, so much so that each man was often mistaken for the other by comrades; The beautiful team of white-faced horses—Dixie and Dexter—purchased of "Lem" by the late Charles Noble Williams will be recalled by many of the older residents of Elizabethtown.
