a. Note:   In the 1880 census, Bernard was listed as a carpenter and apparently went by Barney. In the St. Joseph's Church 125th Anniversary book written in 1980, it says that Bernard Underberg helped build the church, but does not give the year the church was built. Barney was in ill health from tuberculosis. This may have been why Barney and Katherina stayed with her family when the rest of the Underberg and Kries family moved to Carroll County in the early 1870's. Katherina's father, Bernard Braun, ran a country hotel and dining room at Brown's Station and rented carriages and horses to traveling men who stopped there. Barney never owned any property and left virtually no records about himself. The only one of his children who had any children was Josephine, who married Emil Fuegen. Some of their descendents are still living in Clinton County.
