Let the record show the 1870 U.S. census records a Vencil ( Wenceslaus ) Kaspar and Maria Kaspar as residents of Rock Township ( Hillsboro Post Office ) Jefferson County, Missouri, on the 22nd day of August 1870.
Wenzel ( Wenceslaus ) Kasper is buried at St. John's old Catholic Cemetery on Rock Creek Road in Jefferson County Missouri. The hrad stone was very hard to read, and Joseph Lipic III and I visited the grave site, once I had located it. Wenzel was born September 8, 1813 in Bohemia and died June 9, 1871 in Jefferson County, Missouri. ( copies in Lipic Family Archives. )
St. John's Cemetery (organized 1871) is divided into two sections, the old and the new. These two sections are seperated by a C.S.P.S. Cemetery. They are located on Old Rock Creek Road, approximately 2-1/2 miles east of Highway 21 and 2-1/2 miles west of Highway 30 in Rock Township, Jefferson County, Missouri. (Copied by Lisa Barnhart, Norma Hohl, Sheri Hutchens, Mona Sayers, June Sommer, Susan Stohl and Judy Vining, in the fall of 1982)
Rock Creek was an early Czech (Bohemian) and German settlement with the majority of it's population Catholic. Some of the residents joined the Cesko-Slovanskych Podporajicich Spolku (C.S.P.S.), or Czech-Slav Benevolent Society, and founded their own cemetery, which is located between the old and new St. John's Cemeteries. It is not marked in any way, but can be identified because none of the stones will have a cross. The stones in all three cemeteries are written in Czech, German, and English, or a combination of the three. Every attempt was made to translate them correctly, and they are listed with the English translation.
St. John's Catholic Church and Rectory (where the cemetery records are kept) are now located in Imperial, Missouri. The location of the C.S.P.S. Cemetery records is unknown, to the compilers of this publication.
A brief overview of St. John's Parish is contained in 'Along Old Gravois' by Della Lang. (St. Louis, MO. : Beaumont Graphics Ltds., 1983, pp. 85-86) A copy is available in most public libraries in the St. Louis area. A copy is also in the Lipic Family Archives.
1880 - The 1880 U.S. census shows Mary (K) Casper, widow, living at the residence of George Straka at 910 Shenandoah in St. Louis. George's wife was the former Anne Casper child of Wenceslaus and Mary Kasper of Jefferson Counrty, Missouri.
