He stayed there 6 months, then moved to the St. Louis area. His brother John H. Timmermann had a teaming business. He worked for his brother for 2 years, while learning the English language. When he earned sufficient money he went into the grocery business. Gerhard is buried in Sect. No. 019, Lot No. 0012, Grave No. 09004 at Calvary Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri according to the death records in St. Louis, Missouri he was buried April 2, 1910. Obituary G.D. April 10, 1910: Gerhard H. Timmermann: The funeral of Gerhard H. Timmermann, 85 years old, who died Wednesday evening at 11:30 o'clock at his residence, 1018 Dillon street, from old age, contributary to cold and fever, will be held tomorrow morning at 9 o'clock from the residence to St. Mary's Catholic Church, at Third and Gratiot streets, thence to calvary cemetery. He is survived by his widow, Mary C. (nee Hackman), two sons and two daughters, fourteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Reverend Father Aloysius GartHoeffner of St. Mary's Church will conduct the services. Six of his grandsons will be his pall-bearers -- G.H. Klute, Charles A., Aloys, Vitus and Odo Klute and H.C. Timmermann. Mr. Timmermann was president of the St. Louis Iron and Machine Works for fifty years. He was born in Hannover, Germany, coming to America when he was nineteen years old (1900 census says 1842). He came to St. Louis sixty years ago, and started a small blacksmith shop at Second and Myrtle streets, now Second and Clark avenue. He later founded the Timmermann iron works in1854, which was incorporated in 1875 and known as the St. Louis iron and machine works. The funeral services will be held in the church he was married in. He celebrated his golden wedding twelve years ago. He was a strict vegetarian, and attributed his long life to abstaining from meat. He was a member of the Merchants Exchange.
